Blueberries and lingonberries benefits for your skin

Aug 20, 2020

While developing Daily Spoon mix for healthy skin and looking for ingredients that would nurture the skin from within, two of them left a big impression on me – blueberries and lingonberries. I was amazed by how much I didn’t know regarding their benefits to our skin. So today, I want to give all the credit to them and give some tips on how we can use them more often.

Blueberry benefits to our skin health

Let’s start with skin protection. Blueberries are one of the best sources of antioxidants compared to other fruits and vegetables. Due to a high amount of flavonoids, they  they protect the skin from external influences such as air pollution, sunlight, and other chemicals.

Studies have found that due to antioxidants, blueberries also reduce DNA damage, resulting in slowing down the aging process.

Blueberries also contain quercetin, which has a positive effect on the skin, while slowing down the aging and protecting skin against UV damage.

These berries also help reduce inflammatory processes. This is especially helpful if you have skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis.

What about the lingonberries?

Lingonberries have similar skin protective properties as blueberries. They also contain quercetin, which can slow down aging processes and reduce sun damage to the skin. Lingonberries also have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects on the skin, which can help if you suffer from acne.

One study examining the anti-inflammatory properties of lingonberries found that their regular consumption can help regenerate the skin and thus have a positive effect on wound healing and slow down skin aging processes.

Another research also found that after 12 weeks of regular consumption of lingonberries, the condition of the skin visibly improved. The research found that the consumption of lingonberries made the skin more elastic, which reduced the visibility of wrinkles.

Despite all these benefits, cranberries are also a source of vitamins A and C, which due to their properties are important for maintaining skin health.

How to incorporate more berries into your diet?

Blueberries in the warm season are easy to find and can be included in the diet in different ways. They can be added in smoothies, porridges, desserts, or just eat one. However, in the cold season, berries can be a little harder to find, so then I use lyophilized blueberry powder. Using the powder, we avoid spoiled berries, which often happens to me and then it’s sad not only because of the berries, but also the money spent. Also, lyophilized products retain the nutritional value and 10 grams of powder replace even 100 grams of berries.

I do the same with lingonberries. I include the berries themselves in certain dishes unless they are needed for a recipe, but in other cases, I usually use the powder , which I often add to my smoothies.

If there is a choice, fresh berries are a better option, but sometimes I like to think more practical and make these berries more accessible.
