How and how much turmeric should we use to feel its effect?

Aug 20, 2020

Turmeric is one of the most commonly discussed superfood spices due to its long list of healing properties. There is plenty of articles about its effect and how it helps to fight various diseases. However, I think a few things constantly forgot to be mentioned in the flow of the information: what does turmeric consist of, what is the active ingredient and how much of it needs to be used to get the positive effect.

Is it turmeric or curcumin?

You’ve probably heard of curcumin. Although I usually hear that it is the same as turmeric only under a different name, however, curcumin is the main ingredient in turmeric, which is the active antioxidant our body needs. In most studies, the daily dose of curcumin used exceeded 1 gram per day.

However, turmeric itself contains only about 3% curcumin, so to get the most out of this ingredient, you should pay attention to its amount in products.

There are some basic ways in which our body absorbs turmeric or curcumin better. It is recommended to take it with pepper, good fats, and use it warm. Curry stews or turmeric latte are great for this.

Strong antioxidant

Curcumin is one of the strongest antioxidants and is important in reducing the oxidative stress we experience during the day. This is beneficial for the health of our skin, as antioxidants protect it from free radicals such as environmental pollution and sunlight.

Anti-inflammatory effects

This spice also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. The effects of the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin are compared even with the drugs available on the market. This ingredient helps to solve skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or bacterial skin problems. Studies have shown that the skin condition of a group of people taking turmeric/curcumin supplements have improved significantly.

Due to its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, scientists believe that curcumin may also slow down the aging process. However, more research is needed to confirm this statement.

Antidepressant?

I found one study that compared two groups of people who have depression. One group was prescribed medications to help combat depressive symptoms, and the other group was given curcumin supplements. As a result, the well-being results of both groups were similar.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, we added turmeric to our Daily Spoon for Skin Glow blend. Read more about it here.
