Maca powder – natural source of energy and how to use it
Maca ( also known as Peruvian ginseng) is a nutritious ingredient that looks a bit like a radish at first glance. In the past, it was particularly valued for its effects on fertility and libido, but nowadays maca powder is better known as a superfood that naturally boosts energy levels, endurance and reduces feelings of fatigue. What is maca?
Peruvian maca is a root vegetable that grows in rather harsh conditions in the mountain regions of Bolivia and Peru. The most nutritious part of the plant is the root, where all the valuable nutritional properties and minerals are concentrated. Peruvian ginseng is most commonly found in powdered form, already dried and processed. Maca powder has a very mild aftertaste with honey and nutty notes.

This superfood has excellent nutritional value: 1 tablespoon (8 grams) contains 5 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein and 0.5 gram of fiber. Maca powder is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as: vitamin C, copper, iron, potassium and calcium.
A natural source of energy
In terms of nutritional value, it can be noted that maca powder contains a significant amount of good carbohydrates, which are absorbed more slowly, thus ensuring an even maintenance of energy levels. Also, recent research indicates that this ingredient may increase endurance and improve athletic performance (a study was conducted on cyclists and recorded faster performance and less fatigue in athletes who consumed Peruvian maca).
May improve mood
Several studies have found that Peruvian ginseng can have an effect on mood. The ingredient contains flavonoids, which have been implicated as being partly responsible for improving mood. In addition, maca has a high concentration of vitamin C, which is the vitamin that has been reported to help the nervous system and to reduce feelings of depression and anxiety and to improve mood levels.
May increase libido
A frequently cited benefit of this superfood is that it is a natural way to increase libido levels. Several different studies conducted in the early 2000s found evidence that regular maca consumption improves libido after at least 6 weeks of consumption. It is true that the studies were carried out on men, but later studies have also found changes in post-menopausal women.
May improve brain function
Interestingly, maca supplements can improve memory and mental performance in general. Although these studies are very recent and most of them have been carried out on animals, the Peruvians themselves (the region where the root is grown), and more specifically school children, have used maca with the aim of improving learning performance in schools.
How to use maca?
It is recommended to take 1-2 teaspoons per day. Its mild flavour makes it easy to incorporate into your diet: it can be added to vegetable smoothies, as a flavouring in porridges, yoghurts and in chia puddings. Our favourite recipes:

Which is better: maca extract or powder?
The answer depends on personal preferences and goals. It is important to be aware that Maca extract typically contains higher concentrations of the active compounds found in the maca root, which may make it a more potent form of maca, but there is a lack of research to prove this. Maca powder is often less processed and more whole food-based, meaning it may contain more nutrients and fiber compared to maca extract. Additionally, some people may prefer the taste and texture of maca powder over maca extract, which can have a more concentrated flavor and may not mix as easily in drinks or other recipes.

I use maca powder to flavour my porridge, it adds a great aftertaste to it. I decided to try the Gut Bliss blend because I have constant problems with my stomach… I can say that I really like it, there is no bloating anymore. I plan to try other mixes in the future, because now the rating is 10+!
