Our hair is made up of three layers. If the hair is healthy, natural oils present in the outer layer help protect the inner layers, while healthy, moisture-retaining curls shine beautifully.
Therefore, shine and glossiness are important indicators of healthy hair. When hair loses moisture, the outer layer breaks down, making the hair look dull, lifeless, and damaged.
Dry hair is quite a common problem. Dry strands not only lose their shine and fade but can also become frizzy, curly, and difficult to style, with split ends.
So, what causes our curls to lose their shine, and what can be done to restore silky, radiant hair?
Why does hair become dry? Crucial causes
Hair becomes dry when it does not receive or cannot retain enough moisture, which can happen due to various reasons:
- Environmental factors – dry, hot, or harsh cold weather;
- Harmful water effects – chlorinated, hard, or salty water can dry out hair;
- Certain diseases and health issues, such as thyroid disorders, anorexia, etc.;
- Improper care, including frequent washing, use of unsuitable hair care and styling products;
- Damaging treatments – hair dyeing, chemical perms;
- Frequent use of hot tools – blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons, etc.;
- Genetic factors: dry, frizzy hair can simply be inherited.
How to revive dry hair?
Although the advice may seem a bit unusual, first of all, wash your hair less frequently. Shampoo helps remove dirt and sweat from hair, but it also washes away natural oils (known as sebum [1]).
These oils secreted by the scalp naturally condition our locks, so washing hair too often can trap us in a vicious cycle: already dry hair becomes even drier.
Therefore, avoid excessive washing. Most hair types are recommended to be washed up to 3 times a week, while dry hair can be washed just 1–2 times.
Dry hair care routine: must-have products for nourishment
First and foremost, use products specifically designed for dry hair. Just like curly, dyed, or chemically treated hair, dry hair requires not random products but those tailored to its needs.
Choose products that protect against heat and sun
Hair is damaged not only by styling tools but also by UV rays. Therefore, in summer, it is advisable to use products that protect against UV rays, and in winter – those that shield hair from cold and static electricity. Try to style your hair naturally or at least lower the temperature of your styling tools.
Use masks twice a week
Hair masks are among the most popular products in hair care routines. However, using a hair mask just once a week can prevent dryness, while using it twice a week can revive and nourish the hair.
The best hair masks contain proteins and ingredients that restore keratin cell bonds – keratin K13 and bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate. These substances can protect hair from dryness and damage.
Natural remedies from nature to revive dry hair
Besides masks, you can also use moisture-retaining oils. Hair roots become oily naturally, but the hair itself needs external reinforcement. To retain moisture inside the hair, use these oils:
- jojoba;
- argan;
- olive;
- coconut. It moisturizes, softens, and helps restore hair damaged by heat or sun. One study [2] has shown that coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair structure.
Take vitamins
Many of us have probably heard that hair needs to be nourished and moisturized not only from the outside but also from the inside. We cannot rely solely on cosmetics and oils. Vitamins directly affect the condition of hair and nails.
The most beneficial vitamins for hair include vitamin A, vitamin C, biotin (sometimes called vitamin H), iron, zinc, copper, and others.
It is important to know that in complex dietary supplements, vitamins and minerals must be carefully balanced to ensure optimal absorption.
Therefore, we recommend trying the perfectly balanced “Hair” ritual. It is enriched with keratin – the main building block of hair structure.
Additionally, the ritual contains all the essential microelements that help nourish hair – zinc, copper, biotin, and selenium, along with natural, effective ingredients whose effects are supported by research.
Dry hair ends: what to do?
Finally, if your hair ends have become dry and frizzy, there are effective solutions you can apply:
- Regularly trim your hair ends. Even if your hair is not very long, split and dry ends can make it harder to style. Have you noticed that freshly trimmed hair becomes not only smoother but also softer? This is because the oldest, driest part of the hair – the ends – has been removed.
- Try hair serums and oils. Moroccan argan oil is one of the most popular treatments for dry ends. Distribute a few drops of oil on your hair ends: they will become smoother and more elastic.
By choosing the right care products, protecting your hair and strengthening it naturally from the inside (e.g. with the Hair ritual), you will achieve great results over time: the effort will pay off enormously.
